About Kindred Spirit® Hybrid Oak
The Kindred Spirit® Hybrid Oak is an oak hybrid of Quercus robur 'Fastigiata' × Quercus bicolor thus forming a Quercus x warei. In layman's terms this means an Upright English Oak was hybridized with a Swamp White Oak and this tree was one of the progeny. Kindred Spirit® Hybrid Oak is the trade name of Quercus × warei 'Nadler'. The plant is protected under United States Plant Patent #17604.
The patent was applied for by Mr. Earl Cully and Mr. Joshua Nadler in 2005. The patent was later granted in 2007 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The ortet, or parent tree, is 35 feet tall with a limb spread of 6 feet at an age of 30 years old, and resides on Mr. Earl Cully's property in Jacksonville, Illinois. This clone also exhibits heterosis, hybrid vigor, which makes this a fast growing selection.
The Kindred Spirit® Hybrid Oak is highly resistant to powdery mildew, which plagues the Q. robur parentage. The cultivar Regal Prince® Hybrid Oak (Quercus x warei ‘Long’) (Plant Patent #12673), is a sister seedling to this clone. Both of these cultivars were selected out of batch of chance seedlings that were collected from the University of Missouri – Columbia campus.
